Green Iguana

Green Iguanas are from Central and South America.

They are STRICT HERBIVORES! No matter what you hear about them eating insects or animal proteins… Do. Not. feed these guys these things. It can cause severe issues on their insides. They’re not meant to digest these proteins.

Instead, you can give them a large variety of fruits and vegetables.

Collard greens, turnip greens, mustard greens, dandelion greens (with flowers), escarole, water cress are good examples of healthy greens. Never feed your Iguana (or any other veggie eating animal) Iceburg lettuce. It lacks any nutritional value and can cause the runs.

Fruits can be fed to your Iguana as well. These should be fed in moderation, but they enjoy the variety.  Figs (raw or dried), blackberries, strawberries, raspberries, grapes, mango, cantaloupe, honeydew, watermelon (no seeds), papaya, banana, apple.

Green Iguanas also require special lighting. Heat and UVB is a necessity. 90-95 Degrees Fahrenheit is a recommended healthy temperature for a healthy Iguana, but no lower than 80. Your UVB bulb should be as close as 8″ from where your Iguana basks. You can use a 5.0 UVB bulb with them, but 10.0 won’t hurt them. You want to replace your UV bulb every 6-9 months because the output will degrade with age. UV needs to be unobstructed as well. Your pet cannot get proper lighting through glass or when the bulb is obstructed by plants or too much mesh.
