“My Reptile Won’t Eat!” and Other Issues Found When it’s Cold!

There are a lot of comments and posts about ornery snakes that just won’t eat, bearded dragons that do nothing but sleep sleep sleep and some critters that go through a completely catatonic state! Most of this is due to WINTER! Some animals will go through a month (sometimes up to 6 months) of downtime this time of year. It can be prevented (with most species) with proper habitat maintenance. Some keepers induce this state for breeding purposes. This is called Brumation. Before we get down and dirty with the facts of brumation and reptile hibernation… lets do a basic rundown of reptiles! Reptiles are Ectothermic… this means that … Continue reading

Sulcata Tortoise Care!

The Sulcata Tortoise is a favorite among many of our customers because they are absolutely adorable as hatchlings. They’re only an inch or so across (sometimes not much bigger than a pingpong ball!) and love to eat! The biggest issue with those people who find them irresistible is the lack of research. A Sulcata becomes a lifetime investment and commitment. They’ll be a living heirloom for your children and even grandchildren to pass down. They’ve been known to live up to 150 years (or more!) and grow almost 200lbs! These are NOT a beginner pet. Down to care and handling! Habitat: As hatchlings, you can keep them in a 10 gallon … Continue reading

There’s An Assassin Amongst Us!

The Assassin Snail (Clea helena), also known as the Snail Eating Snail, is a breath of fresh air in our freshwater aquariums. These guys occur naturally in Southeast Asia. They eat decaying protein, acting as a small cleaner as well as ‘assassinating’ the annoying Trumpet snails that often over run your tanks from seemingly nowhere. These guys don’t over breed like the Trumpets. 4-5 of the Assassins in your tank will have a 20-30 gallon tank clear of an infestation in about 2 months!

Golden Geckos

We just received our Golden Geckos! These guys get there name from the yellow and golden colored scales. Golden Geckos originate from the tropical forests of Vietnam. They can reach a length of 8 inches. They’re insectivores, eating crickets, superworms, mealworms (moderation) and small roaches. All of their food needs to be gutloaded and dusted for calcium and multivitamins. The habitat needed for these guys should be a vertical space. Golden Geckos are climbers, making floor space less important. Temperatures should range 75-80 in the basking area and room temperature is fine in the ambient temp of the cage. They require 60% humidity, but the cage can be allowed to … Continue reading

Volunteer Work at Animal Ark

This young man comes into Animal Ark on his days off from school to help us keep the store in working order. As a volunteer, you’re expected to help feed and water our small animals and our petters (large enclosures in the front for handling certain animals like rabbits, guinea pigs and prairie dogs). Facing and dusting shelves are often done too. What you do depends on your age and skill level. Volunteers have to be ready and willing to follow direction and learn about what they’re caring for while here. It can be a very rewarding and educational experience!

Green Iguanas!

We have baby Green Iguanas available at Animal Ark!     Green Iguanas are from Central and South America. They are STRICT HERBIVORES! No matter what you hear about them eating insects or animal proteins… Do. Not. feed these guys these things. It can cause severe issues on their insides. They’re not meant to digest these proteins. Instead, you can give them a large variety of fruits and vegetables. Collard greens, turnip greens, mustard greens, dandelion greens (with flowers), escarole, water cress are good examples of healthy greens. Never feed your Iguana (or any other veggie eating animal) Iceburg lettuce. It lacks any nutritional value and can cause the runs. … Continue reading
