New hutches just in time for Spring!

With these spiffy new hutches, your pet rabbit, guinea pig or other grass eaters can free graze without the risk of running away or becoming prey for local predators. Babies on Valentine’s Day!

We have 8 new additions to our Animal Ark family!

20140206_101153 20140206_101109 20140206_101101

These cute and fluffy bunnies will be ready for presale to find their forever home on Valentines day, February 14th! They’ll be officially ready to go home by February 20th!

There’s not much around here that’s cuter than giving your special someone a special something. (Come on guys… girls love cute and cuddly things!)

Remember: Purchasing a pet is a commitment. Rabbits will live for 9-12 years. During this time they can make a very rewarding pet. Litter trainable and easily house broken, these guys can be fun for the whole family. Their diet consists of hay based pellet food, fresh hay and occasional treats! Young rabbits need alfalfa based pellets until they’re about 6 months. After that, Timothy based is just fine.

Research is key!

Knowing about your pet is crucial to their health and happiness. Diet, exercise, socialization (or lack of for ornamental pets) are very important.

Owning a Cat is super easy if you have a lap, good food, fresh water and proper grooming (depending on the breed grooming isn’t an issue) They’re pretty self-sufficient critters. Dogs aren’t much different but they tend to need more attention, exercise and outdoor time and a different diet than a feline.

Cats and dogs are too ‘normal’ for you?! That’s not a problem either. There are hundreds of other animals to choose from.

-Reptiles need special heating because they’re cold blooded. They can’t regulate their temperatures like we can. A heat source is needed so they can heat and warm to their liking. Diet varies too! Snakes are usually small mammal eaters, but in rare cases you have certain snakes who need specialty foods like toads or even small insects. Bearded Dragons need an omnivorous diet of feeder insects (crickets, reptiworms, superworms as a treat, roaches) and vegetables (collard greens, mustard greens, red leaf lettuce). Nutrient value of each item will also vary. You can add a vitamin and calcium powder to the crickets or salad to add extra needed nutrients. Crickets can be gut-loaded by feeding a high quality feeder food like Repashy’s Bug Burger or Fluker’s Cricket Diet.

Small Mammals like hamsters, gerbils, rats and mice are cute, tiny, easy to care for and make good starter pets for children. The diets vary from animal to animal here. Rats and mice are opportunistic feeders and can eat a plethora of items, however, you want to feed them a proper balanced diet. There are specialty foods you can feed them as well as treats. Rodents need to gnaw to keep their teeth from over growing. Providing wood blocks or chews adds entertainment and needed grooming for your small animal. Hamsters (teddy bear, djungarian, roborovski) are also omnivores. You can offer your Hamster dried nuts and fruit, but not in excess. Gerbils like seed mixtures and bulk things like Petblock. Be careful because Sunflower seeds contain a lot of fat. Use those as treats.

There is so much that goes into keeping a pet, regardless of size or species. Research is key to keeping a happy and healthy pet. Please read up before purchasing any pet from a pet store or a rescue. This way you AND your pet are happy!

Golden Geckos

Golden Gecko

We just received our Golden Geckos!

These guys get there name from the yellow and golden colored scales. Golden Geckos originate from the tropical forests of Vietnam. They can reach a length of 8 inches.

They’re insectivores, eating crickets, superworms, mealworms (moderation) and small roaches. All of their food needs to be gutloaded and dusted for calcium and multivitamins.

The habitat needed for these guys should be a vertical space. Golden Geckos are climbers, making floor space less important. Temperatures should range 75-80 in the basking area and room temperature is fine in the ambient temp of the cage. They require 60% humidity, but the cage can be allowed to dry out on occasion to prevent mold and mildew. Mist them twice daily. Water bowls aren’t required but can help keep humidity up. Don’t make the bowl too deep if you decide to add one or you risk your critter and their food drowning.

Volunteer Work at Animal Ark

Volunteer

This young man comes into Animal Ark on his days off from school to help us keep the store in working order. As a volunteer, you’re expected to help feed and water our small animals and our petters (large enclosures in the front for handling certain animals like rabbits, guinea pigs and prairie dogs). Facing and dusting shelves are often done too. What you do depends on your age and skill level.

Volunteers have to be ready and willing to follow direction and learn about what they’re caring for while here.

It can be a very rewarding and educational experience!

Green Iguanas!

We have baby Green Iguanas available at Animal Ark!

Green Iguana

Green Iguanas are from Central and South America.

They are STRICT HERBIVORES! No matter what you hear about them eating insects or animal proteins… Do. Not. feed these guys these things. It can cause severe issues on their insides. They’re not meant to digest these proteins.

Instead, you can give them a large variety of fruits and vegetables.

Collard greens, turnip greens, mustard greens, dandelion greens (with flowers), escarole, water cress are good examples of healthy greens. Never feed your Iguana (or any other veggie eating animal) Iceburg lettuce. It lacks any nutritional value and can cause the runs.

Fruits can be fed to your Iguana as well. These should be fed in moderation, but they enjoy the variety.  Figs (raw or dried), blackberries, strawberries, raspberries, grapes, mango, cantaloupe, honeydew, watermelon (no seeds), papaya, banana, apple.

Green Iguanas also require special lighting. Heat and UVB is a necessity. 90-95 Degrees Fahrenheit is a recommended healthy temperature for a healthy Iguana, but no lower than 80. Your UVB bulb should be as close as 8″ from where your Iguana basks. You can use a 5.0 UVB bulb with them, but 10.0 won’t hurt them. You want to replace your UV bulb every 6-9 months because the output will degrade with age. UV needs to be unobstructed as well. Your pet cannot get proper lighting through glass or when the bulb is obstructed by plants or too much mesh.

Come check out our selection of Green Iguanas.

We also sell Red Iguanas!

Baby Ferrets!

We’ve just received our litter of baby ferrets in time for the holidays. They’re full of energy and spunk. It’s like a cat and a slinky had a baby… a very cute and fuzzy baby.

These guys are pretty easy to take care of but need lots of love and attention like any animal does. They’re here to find their forever home.

Ferrets live for anywhere from 7 to 10 years and are carnivores. You can feed them ferret diet or high quality cat foods. They’re crepuscular. This means they sleep for a really long time (14-16 hours a day) and are only active around dawn or dusk.

Ferrets like sleeping in a quiet and dark place so giving your new pet a hidey hole. There are special beds and toys made specifically for play and sleep. (we sell a few of these here specifically for ferrets)

Ferrets have a very unique method of “come play with me”. It’s commonly referred to as the “weasel war dance”. It’s a very hyper show of excitement much like our feline friends when playing with a favorite toy.

If this all sounds like something you and your family can enjoy, please come on down to Animal Ark and see our new additions to the AA family!
